Thyroid Optimization

Looking Beyond the TSH

Your thyroid plays a role in nearly every system in your body. It influences metabolism, energy, temperature regulation, heart rate, digestion, mood, menstrual cycles, and more. So when thyroid function is not optimal, the effects can be felt throughout the body.

At The WELL Integrative Health, I take a comprehensive approach to thyroid health. Rather than looking at one laboratory number in isolation, I consider your symptoms, medical history, thyroid labs, medications, and overall health to develop an individualized treatment plan.

What Does “Thyroid Optimization” Mean?

Traditional thyroid care often centers around TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone. TSH is an important laboratory marker, but it is only one piece of the thyroid picture.

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, a more comprehensive evaluation may include:

  • TSH

  • Free T4

  • Free T3

  • Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO)

  • Additional thyroid testing when clinically appropriate

  • A review of other factors that may contribute to fatigue, hair loss, weight changes, mood changes, or other symptoms

I also look at the person behind the laboratory results.

Two people can have similar thyroid numbers and feel completely different. That’s why your symptoms and history are an important part of the conversation.

Common Signs Your Thyroid May Need Attention

Thyroid dysfunction can present in many different ways. Symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Difficulty losing weight or unexpected weight changes

  • Feeling cold when others don’t

  • Hair thinning or hair loss

  • Dry skin

  • Constipation

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • Low mood

  • Changes in menstrual cycles

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Muscle weakness or aches

  • Changes in heart rate

These symptoms can have many possible causes, so experiencing them does not automatically mean you have a thyroid disorder. A thorough evaluation is important.

Hashimoto’s and Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks thyroid tissue. It is one of the most common causes of hypothyroidism.

When Hashimoto’s is suspected, thyroid antibody testing—such as TPO antibodies—may provide important information that isn’t captured by TSH alone.

Understanding the underlying cause of thyroid dysfunction can help guide the conversation about treatment and monitoring.

Thyroid Medication Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

There are several approaches to thyroid hormone replacement, and treatment should be individualized based on the patient’s diagnosis, symptoms, laboratory results, medical history, and response to therapy.

Levothyroxine is a commonly prescribed form of thyroid hormone replacement. In selected patients, other thyroid hormone preparations or combination approaches may be considered.

My role is to work with you to determine what is medically appropriate, monitor your response, and make adjustments when necessary.

The goal isn’t simply to chase a particular laboratory number. The goal is to appropriately treat thyroid dysfunction while paying attention to how you are actually doing.

My Approach at The WELL

At The WELL Integrative Health, I combine conventional medical care with an integrative perspective.

That means we don’t dismiss standard thyroid testing—but we also don’t stop the conversation at one number.

I take time to understand your symptoms, review your thyroid history and medications, evaluate appropriate laboratory markers, and consider other factors that may be contributing to how you feel.

Thyroid care can be especially frustrating when you know something isn’t right but are told that everything is “normal.” A more thorough evaluation can help determine whether your symptoms are related to your thyroid or whether another underlying issue needs to be addressed.

You Deserve to Be Heard

Your thyroid health is about more than a lab result.

If you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s, are experiencing persistent symptoms, or simply feel that your current thyroid treatment isn’t addressing the whole picture, a comprehensive thyroid consultation may be a helpful next step.

At The WELL Integrative Health in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, my goal is to provide individualized thyroid care that looks at the whole person—not just a single number on a lab report.

If you’re ready to take a closer look at your thyroid health, schedule a thyroid consultation with me at The WELL.
